Above Cassou for the last time…

The steep limestone grassland above the village has provided endless riches, a fleeting Apollo perhaps the pick of the many butterflies but there was also an array of orchids and other vibrant flowers on this large patch of pelouse calcaire. With the advent of spiked speedwell it is not surprising to find good numbers of Glanville fritillary joining knapweed and other species. Ophrys orchids are starting to appear and with every week there is something new to find. It is sad to leave when the June flora and fauna is just around the corner and the warmth of a hot summer is starting to bake the hills…
